Governor Murphy recently signed Executive Order 172 which relaxes the 2-month waiting period for health insurance enrollment for new and rehired employees, making them immediately eligible to enroll in the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP) upon hire. The change is retroactive to March 9, 2020 and will be in effect through the duration of the Public Health Emergency.
Employees Hired on or After August 3, 2020:
Employees eligible for SHBP hired on or after August 3, 2020, the date Executive Order 172 was signed, will automatically have their health benefits take effect on the date of hire. No action needs to be taken by the employee.
Employees Hired between March 9, 2020 and August 2, 2020:
Employees eligible for SHBP hired between March 9, 2020 and August 2, 2020 must indicate that they wish to have their SHBP coverage retroactively effective to the date of their hire. Employees will be responsible for paying their portion of the premiums through payroll deductions as additional back payments until premiums have been paid. University Human Resources will be contacting these employees via email in the next few days to collect this information.
