Part-Time Lecturer and Co-adjutant

Appointments (PTL/Co-ad)

Part-Time Lecturer (also referred to as a “PTL”) is an employee hired to teach either: a full course (including a laboratory course) for one full semester or to teach a recitation section for a full semester, or at least two consecutive seven-week courses in a semester, or at least a 12-week course in a semester in the PALS Program, and who performs services associated only with that course and is not otherwise Rutgers employee, such as preparation of syllabus, grading examinations and papers, and meeting students during assigned office hours.

Coadjutants (also referred to as "Co-ads") are individuals who either teach during the academic year and are otherwise regularly appointed employees with a 50% or more Class 1 appointment, or individuals who teach less than a full semester during an academic year. Co-adjutant Non-Teaching Appointments are employees who do research and other non-teaching academic support duties when the individual is hired for less than a semester or for a full Fall or Spring semester.

Please have the employee complete the Oath or Affirmation (required for first time appointments) and Determination of Titles form and retain the origionals in the department.  Pension Eligibility for Part-time Lecturers

Taken from 2/9/09 Email Message from Rutgers UHR:

New Jersey pension reform legislation affecting part-time lecturers (PTL) was recently signed into law. Any PTL whose most recent employment agreement began on or after November 1, 2008 is required to participate in the Alternate Benefit Program (ABP)…

PTLs employed under an agreement prior to November 1, 2008 are eligible to participate in ABP once they begin service under a subsequent employment agreement. Part-time lecturers already enrolled in PERS entering a new employment agreement for an ABP-eligible position will remain in PERS unless they elect to transfer to ABP. PTLs can complete the Election of Retirement Coverage form available at http://uhr.rutgers.edu/sites/default/files/ABPRetirementElection.pdf within 30 days of commencing employment.

If a PTL does not wish to remain in PERS, he or she may irrevocably waive benefits under PERS and transfer accumulated pension service, contributions, and any available employer contributions to ABP. Additional information and necessary forms to transfer to ABP are available at http://uhr.rutgers.edu/benefits/retirement/instructions-transfer-abp-pers.

Part-time lecturers employed under an agreement on or after November 1, 2008 are required to participate in the Alternate Benefit Program (ABP) and will be enrolled in the program.
