What are SAS Policies?

SAS policies are those which are more restrictive than University policies on a particular issue or which we develop in the absence of a University policy.

Policy Adoption Procedure

Nominations for new policies go to the Policy Advisory Board (PAB), which hears the case for creation of the policy and distinguishes between administrative and academic policies.

a. Administrative Policy

1. Policy owners draft a policy according to the agreed upon format and timelines

2. Draft policies are first reviewed by the PAB for completeness, clarity, and appropriate format

3. Preliminary approval is granted to the policy owner, allowing them to seek additional comment from the SAS community (usually, academic department chairs/program directors, academic department administrators, and administrative unit managers)

4. Written comments are collected and incorporated or otherwise responded to during a 30-day comment period

5. Policies return to PAB for final review and approval

6. Once approved, PAB recommends policy to Executive Dean for adoption

7. Adopted policies are then disseminated

b. Academic Policy

1. In consultation with the Executive Vice Dean, appropriate dean’s office personnel nominate and draft a policy

2. Draft policy is circulated among academic department chairs and/or program and Center directors for comment

3. Comments are incorporated into draft policy, which is then forwarded to the SAS Executive Committee for review and recommendation to the Executive Dean for adoption

4. Adopted policies are then disseminated
