Post-Doctoral Fellow: A Post-Doctoral Fellow is an individual who receives a grant for post-doctoral study and training.  The term of appointment of a post-doctoral fellow is ordinarily one year.  No services are required of postdoctoral fellows, either by Rutgers University or the funding agency, in exchange for this award; any benefit to Rutgers or the funding agency should be incidental to the purpose of continuing the fellow’s education.  A postdoctoral fellow is usually appointed for periods not in excess of one year at a time. Posting and/or advertising of this position is not required.  

Post-Doctoral Associate: A Post-Doctoral Associate is an individual who performs complex research activity under the supervision of a Principal Investigator.  The term of appointment of a post-doctoral associate is ordinarily one year. A postdoctoral associate is an individual holding a doctoral degree employed by Rutgers University to perform research or scholarship, in continuation of his/her education, and under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), in order to meet the research or scholarship goals established by the pertinent funding agency. The efforts of the postdoctoral associate must be certified to the funding agency.  An appointment as a postdoctoral associate within academic departments requires the approval of the appropriate Dean and of Center Directors for appointments within research centers. Posting and/or advertising of this position is required.

SAS Appointment Process

An appointment letter will be generated via the Post Doctoral Fellows/Associates Appointment Portal. For new appointments, a CV and 3 letters of recommendations will need to be uploaded. Once the request flows throughout each approval process, a letter will be generated via the DocuSign system. The employee will need to sign the offer letter via DocuSign. The signed form will be available for both the department and SAS HR via the Post-Doctoral Appointment Portal.

For Post-Doctoral Associates, Class 1 employees, the offer is contingent upon a background check investigation. Upon completion of a successful background check, the new employee will need to schedule an appointment with the SAS Onboarding Team to complete their on-boarding.

SAS Reappointment Process

A re-appointment letter will be generated via the Post Doctoral Fellows/Associates Appointment Portal. For Re-appointments, a CV will need to be uploaded to initiate the generation of the offer letter. The employee will need to sign the offer letter via DocuSign. The signed form will be available for both the department and SAS HR via the Post-Doctoral Appointment Portal.
If the payroll record is still active and continuous, Departments can enter the 'Request for Reappointment' in HCM by attaching the appropriate documents.
